This wonderful news comes to us from Scotland.

Two Scottish farmers, instead of allowing their ugly potatoes to go to waste, are making vodka from the ugly potatoes and selling them in the supermarkets.

Graeme Jarron along with his wife Caroline every year grow thousands of potatoes which they sell to the supermarkets, however a large amount of the potatoes do not meet the requirements of the supermarkets because they are misshapen and they end up going to waste.

The couple thought about the matter and decided to start using the ugly potatoes to produce vodka from their Ogilvy farm. This makes the farm Scotland’s very first potato vodka distillery.

Graeme is 38 years old and he says, “We grow potatoes for supermarkets, but you would be surprised at the high demand for evenly shaped potatoes. Before they are sent away, we look at them and take out all the wonky ones. By, that I mean the ones that are either too small or too big.”

He continues, “Also if they have a shading of green, supermarkets don’t want to touch them. Supermarkets want potatoes that are a nice medium size so that’s why we thought we should use the wonky potatoes to make vodka and its worked out great. If we didn’t use them they would have gone to waste.”

Ogilvy Vodka is at the moment preparing to open its doors to its new $191,000 visitor center near Forfar, Angus and Graeme is hopeful that the customer experience will be a must see for those who love spirits.

The tours will commence on a vintage tractor and trailer, this will showcase a behind the scenes look at potato farming.

The Jarron family has been farmers of the land at Hatton of Ogilvy Farm since way back in 1910, however only recently they teamed up with the brewing and distilling laboratory located in Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh so that they could produce Scotland’s very first potato vodka.

Ogilvy Vodka now is distributed to independent bottle shops, farm shops as well as delis all over the UK for 36 pounds per 700 ml bottle.
