In a sensational incident, miraculous as well, a one-year-old baby fell off a moving jeep but luckily survived the traumatic fall. The baby was later reunited with its mother. It turned out that the mother hadn’t realized that the baby had fallen off while she was dozing in the jeep.

Rohita, the baby fell from her mother, Satyabhama’s lap as the vehicle was crossing the 5th-mile check-post in Rajamala at 9-30 pm on Sunday. The whole family was returning home after a religious visit to Palani Temple in Tamil Nadu.

All the members of the family had been sleeping in the traveling jeep and long after the baby had slipped down, did the family members realize that the baby was missing. By that time they had reached their home at Mullarikudi which is around 40 km from the spot of the incident. The family members did not waste any time and reported the incident to Vellathooval Police who passed on the message to all the nearby police stations so that the baby could be traced effectively.

The baby is visible on CCTV footage. After falling to the road, she started crawling towards a nearby area which was lit up. This area turned out to be a forest check-post. According to forest officials, this path is always frequented by wild animals, including elephants. If the baby were not so lucky she could have been attacked by wild animals.

Munnar wildlife warden R Lakshmi says, “Luckily the baby crawled towards the light. If she had gone in the other direction, she would have fallen into the pit. R Lakshmi had rushed to the spot of the incident as soon as she had been alerted about the accident with the baby. Checkpost officials contacted her around 10 pm at night with news of the baby.

The baby was injured on her forehead and hands and was crying when she was found. She was admitted to the Munnar Tata Tea Hospital. Closer inspection of the incident on CCTV revealed that the baby had fallen down from the jeep. Munnar police and the control room were informed promptly. The child was handed over to her distraught parents at 1-30 am at night.

Two tribal guards and a forester named Jithendranath were at the check post at the time of the incident. The SI of Munnar, K.S Santhosh reached the hospital to help the parents reunite with the child.
