This wonderful news comes to us from China.

A Chinese doctor had to think on his feet when a passenger on his flight suffered a medical emergency.

Zhang Hong is a surgeon from the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University and he saved an elderly man’s life by sucking urine from the traveler’s blocked bladder during a medical emergency in mid-flight.

The doctor was flying from Guangzhou to New York on China Southern Airlines Flight 399 and was still 6 hours away from his destination when he was called into action on board. The ill passenger was sweating profusely and had a swollen belly. The family of the man had also informed cabin crew that the traveller was previously diagnosed with an enlarged prostate, which Zhang suspected was causing a blockage.

The doctor says,” He was going into shock and may have suffered a risk to his life if we didn’t tend to him urgently.

The flight attendants had set up blankets on the floor in an area towards the back of the plane to facilitate the passenger. Meanwhile, Zhang and another physician on board Xiao Zhanxiang from the Hainan Provincial People’s Hospital in Haikou fashioned a makeshift catheter out of plastic tubing from an oxygen mask, straws from milk cartons and tape and syringe from the medical kit abroad the aircraft.

But the needle on the device was too small to drain the urine. After experiencing difficulties in easing the pressure on the man’s bladder, Zhang stepped up to suck out the urine himself. Going above and beyond the call of duty, this exemplary doctor spent 37 minutes in sucking out 800ml of urine from the man’s blocked bladder.

The footage of the incident shows the doctor spitting into an empty wine bottle as he siphoned the urine using his mouth. We could certainly do with more such dedicated doctors.
