The Nigerian 11 year old boy, Anthony Mmesoma Madu, was awarded with the scholarship after his ballet video went viral. Cynthia Harvey, artistic director at the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of Dance in New York City saw the video hundreds of thousands of times and decided to give him scholarship for the immense and spectacular talent. She was highly mesmerized by the skill Anthony possess.
He was offered a full scholarship to a prestigious dance school in Manhattan. Everyone appreciated him for the talent. He was practicing dance at the leap of Dance Academy in his hometown of Badagry on the Nigerian coast. Academy Award Winning Actress, Viola Davis, who just turned 55 this week, also saw Anthony ballet video and was amazed. She tweeted “Reminds me of the Beauty of my people. We create, soar, can imagine have unleashed passion and love despite the brutal obstacles that have been put in front of us! Our people can fly”.
Seeing the talent of Anthony, School made access to online classes for Anthony so that he can take lessons during summer. It’s not only about Anthony, but also other people whose dreams also may come true. The Dance teacher, Daniel Ajala also had an inspiring story. Though he didn’t win scholarship due to discrimination but was highly appreciated by everyone.
Both Anthony and Daniel breaking their stereotypes showed that ballet is also for boys. Anthony told BBC that people in his place used to believe that ballet is only for girls. He changes the people’s thinking and showed it is also for boys. He set the example of gender equality.
There’s hope in everything you dream. There should be no glance of giving up. Anthony further said that whenever he danced, he feels like he is living dream. Cynthia told “We should always inspire and motivate people to go up rather than pulling down. We should learn from one another as everyone is gifted with different talent”
