This wonderful news comes to us from Ireland.
A 5 year old girl by the name of Priya Galvin has earned a lot of praise for showing presence of mind at a tender age.
Priya’s mother, Mary had collapsed on the floor of their home when she had a stroke. At that time there was only Priya and her baby sibling in the house.
Priya’s father Damien Galvin was on his way to work when he was called on FaceTime by his little daughter who told him that her mother had collapsed on the floor of their residence.
Damien had previously taught Priya how to use the FaceTime app on an iPad and call people. Fortunately for him and Mary, Priya showed exemplary presence of mind to call her father in the hour of crisis. Damien says that he would have not answered the call but for a strange reason he did.
Daniel says, “ I was on my way to work and my phone went off. My daughter was Facetiming me. I normally wouldn’t answer it but something made me take the call. She was crying on the phone. She said that Mammy was drinking a cup of tea and now she was on the floor and she couldn’t get up. She turned the camera around and I could see Mary was on the floor, stressed, and she couldn’t get up.”
Immediately after the video call, Galvin rang up his sister-in-law who sent her husband to Galvin’s house to check on Mary. When he arrived, the backdoor of the home happened to be locked. However, Priya managed to open the door and let him in.
The ambulance arrived just within 40 minutes and after a scan at the hospital it was found that Mary had suffered a stroke. The doctors discovered that there was a clot on the left side of the brain and the left side of her body was completely shut down.
People might argue about technology and its effect on kids. However it must be said that in these times with people living in nuclear families, a basic understanding of technology is of the utmost value. Without it, Priya could never have been able to fetch help for her mother when she most needed it.
