No charge for 91 year old’s boiler repair; Plumbing company shoots into the news

This wonderful news comes to us from the UK.

There is a not-for-profit plumbing company in Burnley that has gained worldwide attention for refusing to charge an elderly customer for work done on her boiler. The receipt for the work says that the 91-year-old woman would not be charged under any circumstances.

The woman’s daughter shared the receipt on social media from where it has been liked hundreds of thousands of times and also been shared. The owner of the plumbing company, James Anderson was caught saying that he hoped to expand his altruism across the country.

James comes from Liverpool and he started off as a bin man before becoming a plumber in 1998. Since March 2017 he has been running Depher- Disabled & Elderly Plumbing and Heating Emergency Repair. It has the distinction of being a not-for-profit plumbing company and it started operations from March 2017.

James says, “There are too many elderly and disabled people suffering in silence. They don’t like asking for help. They don’t want to be a burden. We take away the burden, the stigma.”

James says that the work the company does keeps the old people from running up debt and also helps them to regain the independence they fear they may lose if they think they can’t afford repair costs.”

James work has been costly to him. He has run up debt in the service of strangers. But he is unfazed and will keep doing this work until he says “ when God calls me”. He has an arrangement with his bank and his supplier and is managing to keep his debt of 8,000 pounds under control.

His company also has a crowdfunding page and they perform regular plumbing jobs. James says that any money they make goes into the Depher account. He recently had to lay off two workers because of fund crunch.

James wants to expand his philanthropic work beyond Burnley and any attention brought by the social media buzz is going to be of help to him.

Initially, James was unaware that his note had been shared online. He was at his grandson’s christening and got a few likes and cheers. But ever since, the reaction has been nothing short of global. Calls are coming in from as far off as the US and Germany and also from broadcasters from CNN and Sky. However, James is reluctant to take all the credit and says that his actions are a result of community effort.
