Meet Dadi Chandro Tomar, the world’s oldest female sharpshooter

This wonderful news comes to us from Uttar Pradesh, India.

ChandroTomar is at the ripe old age of 85, but she happens to be the oldest woman sharpshooter in the world. For her, age is just a number and she doesn’t put much stock into how old she is. She is popularly known as Revolver Dadi and is the proud winner of more than 25 championships in the shooting. Chandro hails from Johri Village that is situated in the Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh.

Chandro says that in her village, men expect women to work in the household and tend to different household jobs. It all started for her when she was 65. She wasn’t looking to shoot but had accompanied her granddaughter to the Johri Rifle Club. Her granddaughter was shy to attend a club that had an overwhelming majority of boys. That is why Chandro accompanied her to the club.

At the range, her granddaughter was not being able to load her pistol. Chandro did the needful and she started to shoot at the target, in the course of the event, hitting the bullseye. Everyone at the club was shocked and surprised that a woman of her age could shoot successfully.

Chandro, the mother of six and the grandmother of 15, has not looked back ever since. She says, “As soon as I shot my first pistol I was hooked. And now I have shown everyone that there’s no disadvantage to my age. If you’re focused, you can do anything.”

Chandro is immensely popular in her village. Inspired by her, more than 25 women have braved to step out of their homes and train at the rifle club. Back in 2010 Seema, Chandro’s daughter had the distinction of being the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Rifle and Pistol World Cup. Chandro’s granddaughter Neetu Solanki has made it to international competitions in Germany and Hungary.

Prakashi Tomar is the 77-year-old sister in law of Chandro and has also blazed a trail of victory right from the start. She once defeated the deputy superintendent of Police following which the deputy superintendent refused to come for the award ceremony saying that an old woman had beat him.

Chandro attends the shooting club once every week, besides this, she is heavily involved in household work where she cooks, cleans and does a hundred other household jobs. At the end of the day, she practices shooting in her private shooting range at home.
