This sobering news comes to us from Madhya Pradesh, India.
Rizwan Khan, a 35-year-old school bus driver was picnicking at Baba Jhiri in Kolar with his family when raging floodwaters engulfed them and the brave father died after a heroic attempt to successfully save his children. This happened on Tuesday.
Rizwan Khan along with his children was stuck on a rocky outcrop with the raging river rising in ferocity by the second. Rizwan carried his children to safety but when it came to himself, his feet got stuck under some stones and he perished, with his horrified family watching.
Rizwan was at Baba Jhiri near Kolar Dam around 4-30 pm with his extended family comprising of his wife and kids, his brother in law and a few other relatives.
CSP Singh said that Rizwan and his sons were busy playing in the shallow water that was coming from Kerwa Dam when all of a sudden the water level started to rise alarmingly. The monsoon season had witnessed heavy rains and yet another downpour started when Rizwan was in the water with his kids.
Within the passage of a few seconds, the father and his children were completely surrounded by water. Rizwan sensing the urgency of the situation picked up two of his kids and carried them safely to the shore. The rivulet had become a raging torrent by the time Rizwan returned to save the third child. Rizwan was rapidly losing strength and he battled the floodwaters with all his might as he handed the child to the outstretched arms of his relatives on the shore.
Sadly, while he was trying to extricate himself from the floodwaters, his right foot got stuck under some bulky stones and Rizwan was swept away by the floodwaters. His wife and brother-in-law immediately rushed to get help and the villagers responded at once, but their rescue attempt was hampered by the floodwaters. Police were also prompt to join the rescue operations. But all to no avail, Rizwan’s body was found at 7 pm in the evening. The Kolar police have registered a case, but Rizwan is lost forever.
