This uplifting news comes to us from Aberdeen, Scotland.
20 year Derrick Byrd does not look like a hero, but he rushed through flames, not once but twice, it is his response to a terrifying situation.
In the early morning hours of July 4th, Derrick awoke to a noisy boom and his sister’s screams. Derrick realized that their house was on fire and he sprang into action.
He started by kicking in the door to his sister’s room; his sister was helping the children to jump from the window so Derrick ran downstairs through the flames to catch the children.
Derrick said that his sister Kayla wanted to get the kids out so he ran downstairs even though he got burnt.
It was still dark outside but this did not stop Derrick from safely catching Junior, 6 and Rory, 3. Their mother, Derrick’s sister also fell off the roof. Her third child was 8-year-old Mercedes who fell back into the burning room even as he screamed Derrick’s name. In the meantime, the house continued to burn.
Derrick scarcely thought about his own pain and injuries as he ran up the stairs a second time, to rescue Mercedes.
From his hospital bed, Derrick issued the following statement; “I could feel it burning me. I got her and took my shirt off and put it around her face so that she would not breathe any smoke. I just carried her out as fast as I could.”
Derrick first ensured that his sister and her children were safe and then banged on the neighbor’s door to alert them to the blaze. He was fuelled by adrenaline and this made him run ten blocks to his mother’s place from where he got a ride to the hospital. And by the time that professional firefighters arrived at the scene, everyone had been evacuated thanks to Derrick’s presence of mind.
For all his troubles, Derrick suffered second and third-degree burns to his face, arms, and the back. Wrapped in bandages, he says he would do it again. Now those are the words of a real hero.
